Trust in Divine Power

There has been a lot of research conducted on the positive effects on health of religious affiliation, belief, and practice on a person’s overall mental health and well-being. Some of the factors that religious belief and involvement promote are associated with general well-being and life satisfaction. For example, taking care of one’s body, social support, personal empowerment, optimism, hope, and living with a sense of purpose and meaning are often found in religious settings or systems of belief about God (Koenig et al., 2012). However, making a profession of belief or faith is not as important as what a person believes about God, and what we believe about God’s character impacts whether we will choose to trust Him.

God’s character often gets a bad rap both in and out of the faith contexts. Some belief systems portray God as distant, uncaring, arbitrary, eager to punish, uninterested, or untrustworthy, which produces less beneficial health effects than belief systems that more accurately present Him as loving, merciful, compassionate, patient, just, impartial, forgiving, protective, and full of goodness and truth. Religious cults or doctrines that alienate members from their families and communities, promote prejudice, or require dependence on clergy or rituals can have negative health effects. On the other hand, better mental health states are found when God is seen as well-meaning, kind or as a collaborative partner (Koeing et al, 1998).

With so much suffering and various beliefs in the world, it may seem difficult to take steps towards developing a belief in God as your Creator and Friend. But if you are searching for deeper connection, a sense of being cared for and loved, than why not try cultivating a belief and relationship in God? The first step is to recognize that you are not able, of yourself, to bring your purposes, desires, and into acceptance and agreement with the will of God, but if you are “willing to be made willing” God will accomplish this work for you.

Prayer can be a meaningful and powerful practice for supporting mental health. It can provide comfort, solace, and a sense of connection to God whose thoughts and ways are higher than our own (Isaiah 55:8, 9). Here are 10 ways you can incorporate prayer devotion into your mental health routine:

1. Daily Prayer: Set aside time each day for prayer. Find a quiet and comfortable space where you can humble your heart, reflect, express your thoughts and emotions, ask for forgiveness, present your daily needs, seek guidance, and gain a sense of connection to your Creator. Also keep in mind that prayer is a conversation with God and not just a one-way communication where you are the only one talking. We often use prayer to ask God for things and tell Him our troubles, but we can experience a greater knowing and exaltation of God and His presence in our life as we follow the promise, "Be still and know that I am God" (Psalm 46:10).

2. Gratitude Prayer: Begin and end each day with a prayer of gratitude to God. Express thanks for the blessings in your life, both big and small. If life is good, thank Him, and if life feels like it's burning, thank Him among the ashes. According to Emmons (2008) obstacles to gratitude include negatively bias, living under an illusion of self-sufficiently (i.e., I don't need God or others), internal conflicts in our emotional lives, comparison thinking, and focusing on blame instead of resilience. Cultivating a grateful mindset can shift your focus away from the darkness and towards the light of God's truth for you.

3. Petition Prayer: Offer prayers for your mental health and well-being. Like the man at the pool of Bethesda, share the story of your struggles, fears, and anxieties in the compassionate ear of Jesus, and receive His guidance, strength, and healing (John 5:1-8). Give yourself permission to be open to surrendering your burdens in your prayer conversation with God and to trust in the power of His words.

4. Meditation and Contemplation: True Christian meditation and contemplation are very different from the practices that are more focused on self and repetition, or those patterned after mysticism. Christian meditation and contemplation emphasize a focus away from self and towards God as our Creator, lessons found in nature about God and His plan of salvation in nature, His Word, the righteousness of God's law, God's abundant compassion and willingness to forgive, our dependence of Him, God's goodness and blessings, and of the Life of Jesus, especially the closing scenes (Psalms 19; Hebrews 12:1-3; Philippians 4:8). In God's Word are found an inexhaustible number of themes that can help us if we are open and willing to commune and gain a greater connection with God in prayerful meditation and contemplation.

5. Community Prayer: The Bible encourages us to engage in prayer and stay in connection with others who share our beliefs (Matthew 18:19, 20; Hebrews 10:25; James 5:14-16). We can do this through activities such as attending religious services, asking for an anointing, seasons of prayer with others, other prayer groups, and community gatherings where collective prayers are offered. Being part of a supportive community can provide a sense of belonging, decreases loneliness, offers physical and emotional support, and contributes to better mental and physical health outcomes.

6. Prayer Journaling: Keep a prayer journal where you can write down your prayers, reflections, and experiences. This can serve as a tool for self-reflection, tracking your progress, and expressing your emotions. You can also use journaling to express prayers of gratitude. Being intentional about writing down things we are grateful for increases happiness and motivates you to do good (Emmons, 2008)

7. Affirmative Prayer: In order to live in the light of God's love and value for us, we must come where this light shines, which is in the Word of God. Use and present before God in prayer Scripture promises that can serve as affirmations and positive declarations. Affirmations are statements that reflect your desired mental state or outcome. 8. Surrender and Trust: Humble yourself and emphasize surrender and trust in your prayers. Acknowledge your dependence on God and that there are things beyond your control. Surrender and release the weight of your burdens to God and receive His strength to live in loving agreement to His law. Trust that your prayers are heard and that He will support you as a trusted Friend and Counselor in your journey towards mental well-being.

9. Routine and Sacred Spaces: A regular and intentional prayer practice will improve your relationship with God and increase a sense of His presence in your life. Also, a designated sacred place for prayer helps you to develop a devotional mindset. Be sure to write in your prayer times into your daily calendar or schedule. King David and the prophet Daniel prayed three times a day and Jesus spent all nights in prayer at a designated place (Psalm 55:17; Daniel 6:10; Luke 6:12). Having specific prayer times set aside in your daily calendar increases the chance that it will happen. If you miss your schedule times, reschedule it for as long as it takes until you begin to fulfill your prayer time goals.

10: Seek Spiritual Guidance: If you feel overwhelmed or uncertain about your mental health, seek guidance from trusted leaders or counselors within your faith community. They can provide insights, support, coaching, pastoral care, or help you integrate your prayer devotion with other mental health practices.

Dear Heavenly Father,

I come before you with a sincere and humble heart, seeking Your guidance and wisdom. As Your child, I desire to grow closer to You and deepen my relationship through prayer. Today, I ask for Your Divine instruction in the art of prayer, using the model You have provided us in the Lord's Prayer.

Our Father in Heaven, Hallowed be Your name. I acknowledge Your holiness and greatness, recognizing that You are the Creator of all things and the source of all power and authority. Help me approach You with reverence and awe, understanding the holiness and glory of your presence.

Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Teach me to align my prayers with Your divine purposes. Grant me the discernment to seek Your will above my own, surrendering my desires and plans to Your perfect and sovereign guidance. May Your kingdom principles be evident in my life and in the world around me.

Give us this day our daily bread. Father, You are the provider of all our needs. Teach me to rely on You completely, not just for physical sustenance but also for spiritual nourishment. Help me to trust in Your provision, knowing that You will supply all that I require according to Your riches and grace.

Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lord, I confess my sins to You, acknowledging my shortcomings and weaknesses. Grant me the humility to seek Your forgiveness and the courage to extend forgiveness to others. Help me release any bitterness, resentment, or grudges, enabling me to walk in the freedom of Your love and forgiveness.

Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. Heavenly Father, protect me from the snares and temptations that seek to derail my faith and lead me astray. Strengthen me with the Holy Spirit, that I may have the discernment to recognize and overcome the challenges and trials that come my way. Deliver me from evil, guarding my heart and mind in Christ Jesus.

For Yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. I acknowledge You as my Creator and authority in my life. May all glory, honor, and praise be attributed to You, both now and forevermore. Help me to cooperate with You to live my life in a manner that reflects Your kingdom values and brings glory to Your name.
