Self-Mastery

“And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things…” 1 Corinthians 9:25

In today’s busy world, taking care of our mental and emotional well-being is vital for a fulfilling life. One important tool is self-mastery, also known as temperance. It’s crucial to develop habits that promote stability and balance as we face challenges. Scripture provides timeless wisdom on the importance of self-mastery. The apostle Paul emphasizes this in 1 Corinthians 9:25, stressing the need for self-mastery to achieve our goals in this life and beyond. Additionally, 2 Timothy 1:7 reminds us that God has given us a spirit of power, love, and self-control. These verses highlight the spiritual significance of self-mastery and its alignment with God’s plan for our lives.

Understanding Self-Mastery and Its Significance:

Self-mastery means controlling our thoughts, emotions, and actions, finding balance in all aspects of life. It boosts our ability to handle emotions and impulses, improving resilience and emotional stability, vital for coping with life’s challenges. Research consistently shows that self-mastery contributes to better mental and emotional health (Tangney et al., 2004; Willems et al., 2019).

The Connection Between Self-Mastery and Mental Health:

  1. Emotional Regulation: Self-mastery helps manage emotions and behaviors, preventing impulsive reactions that lead to anxiety, depression, conflict, or behaviors that we don’t value in our life. It fosters choice, which can lead to greater stability and self-control. (Proverbs 16:32)
  2. Reduced Stress Levels: Moderation and eliminating harmful behaviors reduce stress, enhancing mental well-being and peace.
  3. Enhanced Focus and Productivity: Self-mastery aids in prioritizing goals and resisting distractions, improving concentration and productivity, leading to greater satisfaction and mental health.
  4. Building Resilience and Personal Growth: Self-mastery fosters growth by overcoming challenges with patience, perseverance, and wise decisions. This resilience enables bouncing back from setbacks, cultivating positivity and pursuing growth. (Romans 12:2)
  5. Improved Relationships: Self-mastery promotes empathy, patience, and understanding, crucial for healthy relationships, leading to enhanced mental well-being.

Practical Tips for Incorporating Self-Mastery into Daily Life:

  • Examine yourself: Take a few moments to observe your thoughts, feelings, urges, and behaviors. Recognize areas where excessive feelings or behaviors and imbalances may be present. Make note of how they do not align with the law of God and with important principles or values in your life. With God’s help and direction, make needed changes.
  • Balance Rest and Work: Regularly engage in intentional rest and recreation to break up the hours of work or stressful experiences. While we are able to manage all kinds of stress, it becomes harmful to our well-being if it lasts for too long. By interrupting stressful work with rest and recreation, we keep our emotional and energy gas tanks full, which helps us to manage stressful experiences more adaptively.
  • Establish Healthy Boundaries: Set clear boundaries to prevent overextending yourself physically, emotionally, or mentally. Learn to say “no” when necessary and prioritize demands on your energy and time.
  • Eliminate Harm and Moderate Consumption of Good: Be mindful of your consumption habits, whether it’s food, drink, or digital media. Strive for a balanced approach in all aspects of your life. Also, eliminate habits that harm you, such as alcohol or substance use and procrastination.
  • Seek Support: If you’re struggling with achieving temperance or maintaining good mental health, don’t hesitate to seek support from friends, family, health coaches, or professional resources.
  • Surrender: Surrendering and trusting in Divine Power has benefits (see Psalm 68:19 or 103:2) that include reducing our dependency upon others and increasing our personal agency. Jesus promises us His rest if we come to Him (see Matthew 11:28, 29). If doing it on your own hasn’t worked, why not try God?
